Electronic toll collection (ETC) is a technology used to collect tolls or fees for the use of highways, bridges, and tunnels without requiring drivers to stop and pay in cash or manually swipe a card. Factors such as the increasing need for efficient toll collection systems, growing demand for smart transportation, and technological advancements are driving market growth. Rising activities in road & highway infrastructure upgradation in developing economies are also anticipated to increase adoption of the electronic toll collection. Moreover, increased government initiatives and growing environmental concerns present a significant opportunity for the electronic toll collection market.

Electronic toll collection systems offer a more efficient and convenient method of collecting tolls compared to traditional toll collection methods i.e., cash payment. With the increasing number of vehicles on the road, there is a need for toll-collection systems that can handle high volumes of traffic without causing congestion. The electronic toll collection market is being driven by advancements in technology such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Global Positioning System (GPS). These technologies make toll-collection systems more accurate, efficient, and reliable. Some tolling providers are developing all-in-one tolling solutions that can be used across different toll roads, bridges, and tunnels. These solutions are capable of simplifying the tolling process for drivers and reducing the need for multiple toll accounts and tags. An artificial intelligent-based toll collection system, integration with connected vehicles, use of blockchain, expansion of mobile payment options, and adoption of satellite-based tolling is the future of electronic toll collection systems.

世界各国政府正在实施加热器tronic toll collection systems to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and increase revenue. The Indian government implemented FASTag, an electronic toll collection system, to reduce congestion at toll plazas and improve the overall toll collection process. According to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), the usage of electronic toll collection through FASTag has grown significantly in recent years. As per the data provided by the NHAI, toll collection through FASTag for 2022 was USD 8.15 billion compared to USD 4.67 billion in 2021. The average toll collection for December 2022 through FASTag on the national highway toll plaza was USD 16.2 million.

In July 2022, Kapsch TrafficCom AG had been awarded a contract by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) to develop a large Multi-Lane Free-Flow (MLFF) system in Gothenburg, Sweden. The project was expected to cover a complex urban area with an estimated 150 million vehicles passing through each year. The MLFF system is set to be one of the largest urban congestion charging projects in the world, with several charging points and tolling stations. MLFF system will allow for the automatic identification of vehicles at tolling stations under any weather or traffic conditions.
