The solid state relay (SSR) is an electronic device that uses the electrical and optical properties of solid-state semiconductors to turn on/off when a small amount of voltage is activated between its terminals. It is primarily employed to prevent significant accidents or flashovers by tripping the circuit breaker when a fault is detected. This protects the central system from harm. Unlike electromechanical relays, SSRs have no moving parts, leading to a longer lifespan.

Based on mounting type SSRs can be broadly classified into four categories i.e., panel mount, Deutsche Institut für Normung (DIN) rail mount, Printed Circuit Board (PCB) mount and others. In the case of a ‘Panel mount’ the SSR is attached to the panel or chassis of the system, this type is useful where quick access is required. In the ‘DIN Rail mount’ SSRs are designed to be mounted on a DIN rail or ‘German Institute of Standards’, a rail made by metal which adheres to universal sizing used for mounting a variety of industrial control equipment across the world. This type of mounting is commonly used in industrial applications where space is limited, the rail is also advantageous than using screws as using DIN is much more convenient and less labor intensive.

The ‘PCB mount’ type involves mounting of SSR on a Printed Circuit Board (PCB), this type is typically used in electronics industry which involve the use of PCB. Apart from the above mentioned mounting types, other types of SSR like screw terminal mount, flange mount, and socket mount are also used in specific cases as per requirement.

The use of solid state relays in automotive applications, especially electric vehicles, is becoming increasingly popular due to their wear-free, silent, and fast switching operations, as well as their ability to meet both mechanical and electrical demands. The rise in electric car sales, driven by modernization and favorable governmental policies across the world, is boosting the SSR market. They play a crucial role in the battery's switching network of an electric car, providing over-current protection and heat management. SSRs enable increased precision in load control for automotive applications and higher levels of automation in vehicle systems. In addition to their use in daytime running lights, SSRs also find applications in power windows and power seats in automobiles.

SSRs也用于电机控制,照明control, heating systems, medical devices and other purposes. SSRs are used as components in building equipment such as air-conditioning systems, alarm, automatic doors and other safety systems. The properties of SSR such as low power consumption, silent operation, reliability and accuracy incentivize their use in the above mentioned products.

The market for SSRs is expected to grow with the increasing demand for building equipment in developing regions of the world such as Asia Pacific. According to India Brand Equity Foundation, India is expected to spend over USD 1.4 Trillion on infrastructure in the next five years under ‘National Infrastructure Pipeline’. The global consumer electronics market which includes products such as television, air conditioner, refrigerator, microwave oven among others is anticipated to increase due to increasing adoption of hi-tech electronics by consumers and hence the consumption of SSRs is bound to rise along with it. Countries with large electronics industry such as China, U.S., South Korea, Germany and others are also big consumers of SSRs.
